IBAC statement on the appointment of CEO

The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Alison Byrne to the role of IBAC Chief Executive Officer.

Ms Byrne joins IBAC with 25 years’ experience in criminal law and regulation and is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the County Court of Victoria. Having started her career at the New South Wales Crime Commission, Ms Byrne joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (NSW) where she spent several years in the Special Crime Unit prosecuting serious offences including police and public office corruption, and gang related crimes.

She has considerable experience leading regulatory agencies across diverse policy areas, including in building and trades regulation and approvals, elections and campaign finance and professional standards for police and veterinarians.

An experienced leader of large-scale operations across a range of disciplines – including legal services, customer experience, program management, compliance, risk and policy – Ms Byrne holds a Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Social Science majoring in criminology.

“I am delighted to be welcoming someone of Alison’s calibre to the role of IBAC Chief Executive Officer and I look forward to working closely with her upon her commencement,” IBAC Commissioner, Victoria Elliott said. “Alison’s extensive experience as a lawyer and administrator across a range of public sector agencies will serve to enhance IBAC’s ability to meet its critical mandate of preventing and exposing public sector corruption and police misconduct in Victoria.”

Ms Byrne said, “I am thrilled to have accepted the role of IBAC Chief Executive Officer and look forward to the opportunity to work with its passionate and dedicated people to fulfil IBAC's vital purpose of promoting integrity within Victoria’s public sector.”

Ms Byrne will start with IBAC on 19 August 2024.
