IBAC has initiated an own-motion review of the handling of Ms Corinna Horvath’s complaints alleging police assault in March 1996 and associated Victoria Police disciplinary action.

IBAC has initiated an own-motion review of the handling of Ms Corinna Horvath’s complaints alleging police assault in March 1996 and associated Victoria Police disciplinary action.

Former Supreme Court Justice The Hon Bernard Teague AO has been appointed by IBAC to lead the independent review.

In 2001 civil proceedings, the County Court awarded damages in favour of Ms Horvath for assault and other serious wrongs against her by members of Victoria Police. Subsequently, the behaviour by police was sternly criticised by the Court of Appeal.

IBAC has gathered relevant information from Victoria Police and former Office of Police Integrity files for Mr Teague’s review.

IBAC Commissioner Stephen O’Bryan QC said the review was initiated by IBAC to help ensure public confidence that this matter had been handled thoroughly and fairly.

Ms Horvath’s legal representatives and the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police were advised of IBAC’s review of this matter in October 2014.
