Local government risks forum in Camperdown

Victoria’s independent anti-corruption commission is in Camperdown today, working with Barwon South West councils to help strengthen resistance to corruption.

The Corruption Risks in Local Government forum is part of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission's (IBAC) prevention and education program to assist public sector agencies build their own capacity to prevent corruption.

“Each workplace has its own risks, or areas that are vulnerable to corrupt activity,” IBAC CEO Alistair Maclean said.

“Our research shows that councils across Victoria share some common potential risks around procurement and tenders, planning and development decisions, and misuse of authority.

“Knowing how to detect corruption, where to report it and how to prevent it is in everybody’s interest. In today's forum, we’ll be sharing information to help councils identify their own risks, and on ways to prevent any potential corruption in the future.”

The forum is for council leaders and employees in the region, and features speakers from IBAC, the Victorian Ombudsman, the Victorian Auditor General’s Office and the Victorian Local Government Inspectorate, as well as Corangamite and Wyndham councils.
