Sharing corruption prevention and integrity insights in Warrnambool

More than 70 public sector employees will gather in Warrnambool today to attend a Corruption Prevention and Integrity Insights forum, organised by Victoria's independent anti-corruption agency, IBAC.

The event is an opportunity for public sector leaders including senior executives from local councils and state government agencies to learn about corruption risks and prevention.

The forum will be opened by Mr Bruce Anson, CEO of Warrnambool City Council. Public sector CEOs, managers and senior staff working in integrity related roles in Warrnambool and surrounding areas will attend.

IBAC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alistair Maclean, will speak about the importance of building the capacity of the Victorian public sector to strengthen integrity and build corruption resilience.

IBAC, the State's Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission, is responsible for exposing and preventing corruption and misconduct in the public sector.

"These forums are an important opportunity for public sector leaders across Victoria to come together and share insights and practical approaches on how to prevent corruption in their organisations, and we are delighted to be able to hold our second regional forum in Warrnambool" Mr Maclean said.

IBAC has held five major regional forums for the public sector across Victoria, and more are planned for next year.

"Corruption is not a victimless crime, it hurts us all. It wastes our taxes and rates that should be used to operate and maintain Victoria's schools, hospitals, roads and other vital public services and projects," Mr Maclean said.

"And corruption also erodes the community's confidence and trust in the public sector. It’s up to all of us to speak up when something is not right, and report any suspected wrongdoing," he said.

Mr Maclean encouraged people with credible information about public sector corruption to report it to IBAC via the website www.ibac.vic.gov.au or by calling 1300 735 135.

Others presenting at the forum include the Victorian Auditor‐General Mr Andrew Greaves, Deputy Ombudsman Ms Megan Philpot, Chief Municipal Inspector Mr David Wolf and Executive Director Health Service Policy and Commissioning, Department of Health and Human Services, Dr Margaret Grigg. Topics covered included corruption risks, integrity challenges and best practice in corruption prevention.
