Victoria Police officer found guilty following IBAC investigation

A Victoria Police Senior Constable was today found guilty of two counts of unlawful assault in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates' Court, after an investigation by Victoria’s independent police oversight body, IBAC.

Following today's finding of guilt, Senior Constable Dallas Howell will be sentenced on 19 March at Latrobe Valley Magistrates' Court.

IBAC charged Senior Constable Howell with assault offences in February 2018. The charges were the result IBAC's own motion investigation, Operation Poros, into an incident at Moe Police Station in September 2017.

IBAC CEO Alistair Maclean said the community rightly expects police officers to perform their duties and exercise their significant powers fairly, impartially and in accordance with the law.

Mr Maclean said IBAC's independent oversight of Victoria Police represented a significant proportion of the organisation's investigations with almost half of IBAC's 65 active investigations and preliminary inquiries in 2017/18 being into alleged serious misconduct by Victoria Police.
