Victoria University employee sentenced to prison following IBAC investigation

A Victoria University employee has been sentenced to prison following an investigation by IBAC into the misappropriation of over half a million dollars of university funds.

Ms Kamaljeet Kaur Gill, an employee of Victoria University, was sentenced on 27 March 2020 at the Melbourne County Court to three years and six months imprisonment after pleading guilty to the offences of misconduct in public office and obtaining property by deception and theft.

Ms Gill was prosecuted by the Office of Public Prosecutions following IBAC’s Operation Franklin investigation.

IBAC’s investigation revealed that Ms Gill had fraudulently obtained 198 EFTPOS gift cards to the value of $614,261.50 using Victoria University funds after submitting falsified invoices via a university procurement system. A further 102 Coles Myer gift cards belonging to Victoria University with a value of $36,650 were also stolen by Ms Gill, who was employed in an administrative position by Victoria University.
