Victoria's Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission, IBAC has confirmed it is investigating allegations of police misconduct which have been the subject of media reports today. IBAC confirmed it is investigating serious allegations of excessive use of force by Victoria Police officers following the receipt of video footage and other relevant information. IBAC clarified that Victoria Police, as their employer, is responsible for determining whether the officers are 'stood down' from policing duties while they are subject to investigation.
Friday 31 Aug 2018 IBAC charges Victoria Police officers over an incident in Preston last year
Victoria's independent police oversight body, IBAC, today charged two Victoria Police officers following an investigation into alleged excessive use of force on a man in Preston last year. The charges are the result of an Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission investigation into the behaviour of Victoria Police officers when they attended a house in Preston to conduct a welfare check on a man in September 2017. Friday 24 Jul 2020 Victoria Police officers found guilty of assault following IBAC investigation
Three Victoria Police officers were today found guilty of unlawful assault at Heidelberg Magistrates' Court following an investigation by Victoria's independent police oversight body, IBAC. Constable John Patrick Edney has been found guilty of one count of assault with weapon and one count of unlawful assault. Senior Constable Brad McLeod has been found guilty of three counts of unlawful assault. Senior Constable Florian Hilgart has been found guilty of one count of unlawful assault.
Wednesday 29 Jul 2020 Victoria Police officers sentenced for assault following IBAC investigation
Three Victoria Police officers found guilty of unlawful assault, today received adjourned undertakings without conviction following an investigation by Victoria's independent police oversight body, IBAC. Constable John Patrick Edney and Senior Constable Florian Hilgart received an adjourned undertaking of twelve months, with $1000 to be paid into the court fund. Senior Constable Brad McLeod received an adjourned undertaking of twelve months, with $3500 to be paid into the court fund.
Tuesday 10 Aug 2021 Former Victoria Police officer sentenced for assault of 15-year-old boy following IBAC investigation
A former Victoria Police officer was sentenced last week following an IBAC investigation - Operation Durack - into the assault of a 15-year-old boy with a police baton in Preston in January 2018. The 15-year-old victim of the assault was a passenger in a car involved in a high-speed pursuit through the streets of Preston. The circumstances resulted in the victim being arrested and restrained on the road where he was subjected to baton strikes.

Sunday 17 Nov 2019 Deficiencies in Victoria Police review of Inflation night club shooting
Victoria's independent police oversight agency, IBAC, has found Victoria Police failed to properly examine and review police conduct following a critical incident at the Inflation nightclub in 2017, instead focusing on the actions of civilians and not police officers. The incident involved members of the Victoria Police Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) and two patrons at the nightclub in July 2017. This resulted in CIRT officers firing shots, injuring both patrons, one seriously.
